ALMONDS FOR ALAZHEIMER'S

Researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago treated mice that had Alzheimer’s-like disease by giving them a diet rich in almonds. According to a report given at the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience, the mice showed a significance increase in their ability to remember how to run their puzzle mazes. Analysis of the mice’s brains also showed a significant reduction in the amount of Alzheimer’s deposits in their brain tissue.

The researchers speculated that the effect is due to substances within almonds that act like cholinesterase inhibitors, drugs that are used to treat Alzheimer’s. They doubted that almonds alone could cure full-fledged Alzheimer’s in humans, but thought the regular intake of almonds could help prevent the development of the disease.
